More than an architectonic gem
Guaqui’s Mansion stands out for its impressive ashlar (locally known as sillar) vaults and has three patios that, like in many other colonial mansions, serve as spaces to get light and ventilation, essential for the freshness and natural illumination of the interior. The vaulted ceilings, reaching heights of five and six meters, are an architectural marvel that reflects the grandeur and solidity of the constructions of that era.
The history of this mansion dates back to the 19th century, when the Spanish crown created the noble title of Count of Guaqui for a prominent Creole family from Arequipa of Navarrese origin. This family, owners of several estates and engaged in commerce and mining, held high political and military positions. The title of Count of Guaqui was first granted to General José Manuel de Goyeneche, following his victory at the Battle of Guaqui (or Desaguadero), by King Ferdinand VII on May 14, 1817, as recorded in the Royal Grant Order and ecclesiastical records.

Respecting the History and Culture of Arequipa
One of the main priorities in the restoration of Count Guaqui’s mansion has been to maintain the integrity of its ashlar walls, which have been left intact, respecting their original state to preserve the authenticity and historical character of the building. To modernize the mansion without compromising the ashlar structure, all water and electrical installations have been placed in the floor.
The restoration has involved local artisans who have worked meticulously to preserve and restore the original architectural and decorative details. These artisanal works not only revitalize the beauty of the mansion but also highlight the cultural and artisanal heritage of Peru, integrating the old with the contemporary in a harmonious way using traditional and sustainable techniques.
